International and European Public Health Law

This course explores the role of law and government regulation in the area of public health, by focusing on key issues in European and international health law and policy encountered in the global arena. This course reviews current European and international health law practice topics and examines problem areas confronted by practitioners. It examines recent debates in health law and policy through discussion of current events, proposed regulations, and scholarly articles in the legal, risk and public policy literatures. Topics to be covered include international public health law institutions, WHO, WTO, UN, Codex Alimentarius, NGOs and legal issues surrounding topics such as contaminants prevention and treatment (following the melamine scandal), trade and health issues, trade and food safety issues, aviation safety (after the EU volcanic ashes crises) and, finally, import safety regulations. |
